My favorite investing book is "The Little Book that Beats the Market" by Joel Greenblatt. You might also want to take a look at http://www.top10traders.com - this is a free site that lets you create a portfolio of stocks with $100,000 in "play" money. Each day the site ranks the best performing portfolios, so you can see how your picks perform compared to other investors. You can read posts on investing from the best traders, as well as share your own investing ideas. There is a charting feature, so you can see how your portfolio performs compared to the S&P 500. Also, you can create your own "group" so that you can see how you are doing compared to your friends.

Here are this month's best traders:

Good luck.

You'll get some help from the books or you can go to either yahoo/finance or moneycentral/msn and get "beginner guides."
Money central is loaded with links to articles that discuss a lot of different ways of investing...Oh! at msn/moneycentral look for a link called Strategy Lab...about six different investors have portfolios you can watch and the also comment about the why's of their trades
But none of that will make you pay attention like getting that money into Scottrade or E-trade and picking a "leetle" of something you either know about.. or think should do good...
( a restaurant chain, the name you keep seeing on garbage trucks, the newest games or gadgets , the latest from Apple or Microsoft, or the guys who make parts for them, or whoever has the slickest commercials lately......anything, ANYTHING, can make you a little money if you spot it at the right time or if you just have long term confidence in it!
Good luck....the Sat morn Fox money shows are so-so...Cramer (Mad Money- cnbc) does pretty good..and "Fast Money" ( cnbc-nights)..has four guys who KNOW what they're talking about (when you understand them, you're ready to go...
P.S. On those web pages, read about ETF's ..they're a nice little way to spread money into diversified investments and if you go global or international you could build up that $ 1000. pretty quick and then get into individual stocks in bigger lots.( dilutes the commission charge- the "killer" of a small investor)
