What's going to happen if stocks continue to go down?
its been in the news quite a bit lately and i'm curious whether this indicates the coming of a recession? but what exactly does this mean for the everyday american?

The stocks will be worth less than they are today.

Everything will be worth nothing. God help us all- EXCEPT for the guys who walked away with millions and the greedy bankers.

I believe we've been in a recession for several months. You won't hear that until after the U.S. Presidential election. You want an earful, go to www.shadowstats.com. The owner of the site has appeared before Congress and on several TV shows,i.e.: CSPAN. I believe stocks will continue down with the usual ups in between but with a down trend overall. Today, the DOW was down 800 points before recovering. That's 8% in one day. How do keep from losing everything if (when) there is a depression? That's the real question.

Wish us (all) luck!!

recession was on the table ever since housing crisis begins late 2007

now the reality hits eveyone in the faces hedge funds have been unloading their positions there will be more pain to come

look on the bright side, if you have cash you can be searching for bargain and hold it for the next 10 years

Companies are having poor earnings and results, and that is why stocks go down. If you are unprofitable as a business, you will run out of cash and shut down, which means those employees lose their jobs and your stock goes way down. Unfortunately this is a normal part of business, and when lots of companies do poorly we have a recession.
For the everyday American, this means you have to be prepared in case you lose your job or get a pay cut. This means you should have adequate savings in the bank, and have minimal debt!

chances are that we are headed for a deep recession but, maybe, just maybe, this bailout plan will have a good effect on our economy. i guarantee you that the bailout alone wont pull us out of the gutter. the only hope we have for the economy right now is really everyone pulling together and consuming like normal or better since capitalism drives a capitalist economy :) if you want to keep us out of a recession you have to refrain from tucking your money under your mattress. if everyone else can do that we might be able to stabilize this wobbly economy of ours. a little tid bit: people puling money out of banks and stock is what caused the great depression in the first place. so much for not repeating history...
