Real or nominal terms?

Put another way, do you want to get the same income in pounds forever, or the same income 'in today's value'. In the latter case, you need to reinvest enough to cover inflation.

It would be better to invest it without income for 10-25 years, depending on your age, then you would be in a strong position to retire early. You would need to consult an adviser to get a good investment strategy.

I would want a minimum return of between 15 and 20% from a share portfolio. Mine is currently 65% but thats exceptional. Increase the value of your investment next year to cover inflation ( Growth and Income )

After Tax?.......not much. You could give up work for a while but you would have to go back eventualy as inflation would eat into it every year. Add another "0" and you would be ok.

£500 or £600 at 5% in a basket of shares

It isn't much to rely on. Let me guide you how I did my calculations.
140,000 times 0.04 = £ 5600 so this amount you are going to get per year. give away the text 5600 times 0.825 = £4620 Divide it by 12 you get £385 per month. its not alot to rely on.
My advise why don't you buy a property. Because property's will double in 3 to 5 years.
