What's the best way to invest $1000?

$so fresh so clean$
The first thing you have to do is to determine your time horizon and risk tolerance. How long will it be before you need this money? If for a short amount of time (say less than a year), put it into a high yield savings account or money market account. If you won't need it for at least 7 years, you could put it towards a stock fund with low fees and no loads.

Well that really depends on a lot of stuff you didn't see fit to include.

Is this a one time investment or something you want to contribute to over time? Is this for retirement or short term savings? How long before you think you'll need the money and how much return are you seeking and how much risk are you willing to accept?

I have a money market, and a mutual fund account. Start with something like that, and add to it.

If you don't have an emergency savings account with at least three to six months of living expenses in it, then I would put the money into a high interest savings account.

If you already have plenty of savings for emergencies, then I would put it in an index fund that follows the S&P 500 and just hold on to it.

Personally, I'm looking into investing in rental properties, but you need more than $1k for that - if that interests you then you can keep saving your money while you read up on different sorts of investments.

What's your age and income and savings? I'd push strongly for you to invest at least HALF of it in an IRA, which can be a mutual fund, CD, whatever. Any gains aren't taxable until withdrawn and it grows (hopefully) taxfree. Right now the stock market is tanking, and it could be a good time to buy, but you will need to stay in it for the longterm, and not run at every setback.

Buy an index ETF like SPY.
