What's the best way to invest money?

No investment vehicle can duplicate the explosive potential of making money as starting a small business does. Knowing that, no investment vehicle can duplicate the explosive potential for failure that starting a small business can offer. Beyond that option, stocks have historically performed highest over time (note the "over time", not in 5 minutes, not in 2 years, "over time"). It takes a lot of hard work and learning on the fly to achieve the achievable with either option.

To look at investing from a broader perspective, investing in a savings account, money market account, certificate of deposit, government bond or like vehicle can provide about a 5% return on investment with little to no work, little to no risk, and liquidity of funds. The aforementioned options come with little to no stress and consume little to no time, which means you experience less stress in your life, you achieve more peace of mind, you are able to put more time into other things that matter, etc.

Money is not everything but I realize that you cannot realize that from where you now stand, moreover, I realize that money can be so many things (a knight in shining armor, power, freedom, peace of mind, etc.). You can work your butt off and learn a bunch of junk to achieve hopefully double of what you would get for doing practically nothing. While you think of that, think (in a general sense) of how many truly successful people you know of who have not been touched by adultery, their children do not hate them, and they do not have their siblings. I realize that those things are not directly linked to wealth but they prove associated more often than not.

It depends on whether you want long-term or short-term. Bonds and Cds are the best short term options, because the money is tied up for a set amount of time and a fixed interest rate. However, stocks typically outgain bonds over a long amount of time. If your a first time investor with extra money, consider a mutual fund like those by Fidelity investments....mutual funds have interests in all kinds of investments, so they are secure and lucrative over many years.

What money are we talking about?

If you're talking about money that you'll need in the near future, I'd go with a CD or money market account.

For money you'd like to grow over time, you should probably consider stocks. You can establish an account at a broker with a $500 - $1000 initial balance, or you can go to Sharebuilder and set one up for free and buy stocks for as little as $4 / transaction. (Sharebuilder's great if you're wanting to accumulate a portfolio over several years.)

Real estate is great depending on the amount of money you have to invest and the time you have to devote to it.

If you're talking about speculation money that you can afford to lose, you can consider vehicles like stock options. Depending on the strategy you use, you can make a lot of money, but you can also lose a lot. (Some of the riskiest strategies can lose you a LOT more than you invested.) I wouldn't recommend options unless you have time to educate yourself up front and then monitor your investments.
