Mike | What's the difference between 401k and mutual funds? which one do you suggest? |
I have about 20,000 dollars in 4 different mutual funds and I was thinking about putting 250 dollars in to each one , each month.
And do 401k about $250/month. Does this seem like a bad idea? Should I just invest 20,000 in stocks and do 250/mo. in 401k? Additional Details which one would you suggest?
20,000 in mutual fund and additional 1,000/mo. in it and also do 250/mo. in 401k, or everything in just 401k? |

A 401k is a savings plan the you invest part of your wages and the company you work for matches a portion of what you invest. this is not even close to a mutual fund. you can not just go stick money into a 401k. it is closely regulated by uncle SAM. The 401k is the best thing going to save money and i suggest you invest every penny that you're allowed to . |

A 401(k) is not an investment in and of itself. It's a type of account that your employer opens on your behalf. Inside the account your money is invested in mutual funds. So, to answer your first question, a 401(k) is a type of account, and a mutual fund is an investment.
So, in your example, you will be investing in mutual funds whether you do it in a 401(k) account or just a regular investment account.
Which type of account should you use? It depends on when you are going to want to take the money out to use it. If you will be leaving it in the account until you retire, then you should put as much in the 401(k) as possible. If you will need it before then, you should use a regular investment account. The reason is that if you take money out of the account before you reach the age of 59 1/2, the IRS will make you pay a 10% penalty on it. |

A 401k is a retirement plan. You can think of a 401k as an empty shell. Anything you put inside that shell is tax-deferred. You don't have to pay taxes on it until you take it out of that shell. A mutual fund may be one of the options your employer allows you to put in that shell. You can invest in a mutual fund separately but its going to be taxable unless its in a retirement plan. You will have to pay taxes on the dividends and capital gains each year. And on the mutual fund shares when you sell them, if there is a gain. |

a 401K is an INVESTMENT product. The features of a 401K are that what you as the plan participant put into the plan is Nontaxable income for you during the year you make the contributions. most employers match your contribution up to a percentage. You then make investment elections - where you want that money invested in (stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds) You would look at the performance of each option the plan offers.
Mutual Funds are groups of stocks and bonds managed by investment bankers to earn the biggest returns for the investors (you)
Now, the IRS will limit just how much you can contribute to the 401K (remember tax free) 10,500 for 2007. Take the remaining money and invest in mutual funds, stocks whatever your risk tolerance allows. |

a 401k plan is a retirement plan. Your investments within the 401k could be mutual funds or stocks or cd's or GIC's. You could have a 401k plan without mutual funds. 401k plans are employer sponsored. If your employer doesn't have the plan or you don't have self-employment income, you couldn't set up a 401k plan. |
