1. If he/she can invest it in the company 401(k), if available, that would probably be smartest (depending on investment options available) - especially if the company offers a match.
2. Short of that, next best thing is open / fund an IRA, to which most folks can contribute up to $4,000 in a single year (more if over age 50). Probably would want to go with Roth IRA over traditional.
3. If IRA already fully-funded in 2007, open a mutual fund account.
Options available under items 2 & 3 (and potentially 1 as well) include my favorite mutual fund families: DFA, T Rowe Price (TRP), & Vanguard. However, you can't invest in DFA funds without paying commission via financial advisor, so unless already working with one I recommend TRP or Vanguard. Both have many selections available - TRP is known for the quality of its international funds, among other things, and Vanguard as the low-cost leader. Minimums to invest are generally lower at TRP. For example, this person could probably invest in up to 5 separate funds at TRP with that $2500. TRP also offers low-minimum ($50/month) regular recurring investments to help build wealth consistently without crimping the budget too much.
As for which funds within those families, answer would depend on what your friend currently has for other investments. I will assume little to none, in which case I recommend (if he/she prefers single fund) a global fund which invests in both US and abroad. But to me multiple funds would be preferable to improve diversification - in a way that includes exposure to both US and international, small-cap & large-cap, and value & growth. |

Place the money in a fix-term deposit. It offers better interests versus traditional savings. |

1) Save enough to pay the taxman
2) Blow $250 on something frivolous (it will help you not spend the rest)
3) Give $250 to charity
4) Invest in a DRIP (direct reinvestment program) - buy a couple of shares of something like MO (Altria), Exxon Mobil, or other good dividend paying stock.
The benefit is that the income that you'll receive will be taxed at a lower rate than what you will get from a CD. You will also be less likely to cash it in, because it's hard to get to the money. The income will be reinvested in more shares.
BTW, I invested $250 in Exxon in 1992 - and reinvested dividends and never touched it - I cashed out last year and received thousands of dollars. |

Since you posted your question here, I would say investing in stocks or funds. Are you a lazy guy? hehe j/k Are you going check stock market regularly or not? If not, mutual or index funds are better.
Choose an online brokerage:
Inexpensive ones -- Zecco, ShareBuilder, TradeKing, Scottrade, ...
Others -- TD Ameritrade, ETrade, Fedelity....
Good Luck! |

set some aside for a rainy day. set some aside for a vacation. invest the rest- real estate is still going down. the stock market is hot but will get hotter before declining. bonds are safe and every one should have some. the key is moving money you make back to rainy day fund and vacation. always look to sell-take profits. THe biggest key is to keep adding to the $. If he is not on top of the market try TR Price and I would look at Internation discovery with $500 and Add $55 per month. |

Start a self directed ira via scottrade or other on -line service.
I'd recomend anything in the food and comodoties sector- people have to eat.
Also look at water companies a good long term investment(like suez)
look for a nice pe ratio under 14- under 12 or 10 is even better, buy cheap when the stock is down.
Companies like bud or coke are a solid investment and most likely won't leave you hanging in the wind. |
