What's wrong with E-Trade?
E-Trade share has gone down from 26.08 on 1/16/07 to a low of 3.63. Do u think is going time to buy or will they eventually merge with another company.

You asked what is wrong with E-Trade and why their share price has dropped.

The simple answer is that their Mortgage business has made many bad loans and this is hurting the company's profitability.

There are plenty of other healthy companies that you can invest in without stressing yourself out.

This is anyones guess. Key word: GUESS.

Citadel bought their real estate loan portfolio for 2.5 billion. That equated to 20 cents on the dollar. ETFC HAD to sell or go BK in my opinion.

The other suiters did not want to buy ETFC because of their real estate loan portfolio. This is gone now, but where are the suiters?

If ETFC loses too many customers, then watch out. If they can hold on to their customer base, maybe they can turn it around.

They will get bought out by someone eventually.

They have reported heavy losses and are in financial trouble. The shares are very risky now, but if the co. is bought out by some one, the share price could double. Depending on your attitude to risk, they may be worth a small bet.

I've been watching it too. It is quiet likely they will get bought out. They did get some cash from Citadel.

The market seems to think there's more bad news coming there.. I would wait and watch closely rather than jumping in right now.

Terrible management. Buyout of the trading business is possible. I don't like the stock - terrible financials.

I doubt they will merge with another company, the stock doesn't look like it will drag in any investors any time soon, this will result in a loss of more money since everyone will want to sell and no one will want to buy. Most likely the stock price will stay in the 3$ range, or might show a sudden loss and turn into a penny stock. Have you seen Washington Mutual? Now that is terrible.

NetAdvis is warm, but a bit off on a couple points.

Citadel put $3B into ETrade. $0.8B was to buy equite in ETrade, and $2.2B bought their entire MB-CDO portfolio, for $0.27 on the dollar. While this does not sound good for ETrade, and Citadel will probably make a huge amount of money the CDO's... Wait, there's more!!!

ETrade bank still has a huge pile of HELOC's or home equity line of credit, and 1st and 2nd mortgages brokered by ETrade. And they are for homes located in some of the worst parts of California & Florida.

I own some stock in ETrade & I think the outlook is bleak, but I haven't sold yet.

As a freind of several inside employees... This is a nightmare, tech wise, outsourcing wise, competition wise, (BOA's new program, etc...) and especially HR wise.

Stocks as you know don't rely on logic... It could go either way but I wouldn't invest right now.
