Try looking into municipal bonds in your area, you don't pay taxes on the money you earn with them. |

I was reading about RBS Guaranteed Capital Bonds earlier
You get the benefit of the stockmarket without the risk! |

You need to provide a lot more information before this question can be answered well. Your tax bracket, risk tolerance, and intended date of needing the bonds back are all required. If you have a high tax bracket, probably a municipal bond which is shielded from federal taxation. If you don't really need the money for anything in particular and can handle high default rates, a high-yield, high-risk junk bond fund is probably appropriate. If you need the money in 6 months for something, probably some treasury bills are appropriate. It just depends. |

it depends on what you mean by BONDS, insurance companies offer bonds which are collective investments wrapped up in a life insurance policy, the charges can be very high but the growth in a life bond is subject to income tax rules.
In proper investment circles a Corporate bond is a type of company debt, the company borrows money with a bond for a fixed duration and at a fixed level of interest but once the bond is issued they can be traded on the stock market, the value of a corporate bond will then be effected by general interest rate conditions and the credit worthiness of the issuing company. The lowest risk Bonds are those issued by the government called Gilt edged securities hence the term Gilts, their is no credit risk with a government Gilt hence they are the lowest risk type of Bond, Corporate bonds are graded according to their risk from AAA down to C anything below B would be termed high yield and you might achieve an income yield of greater than 9% however thier will be a high risk that the company might defualt on the repayment of the capital or at C or below they might default on the income payment too!
At this time Corparate bonds do not look attractive, if you are prepared to take the risk of high yeild why not just buy the Shares instead and the AAA end of the risk spectrum will struggle to beat cash with interest rates rising towards 6% |

Have a look at www.nsandi.com . This is the national savings and investment web site that, effectively, deals with, amongst other things, government bonds. If you look under 'tax free investments' and index linked savings certificates these will give a return that is tax free and is in excess of inflation (although limited to £15,000 per issue). If you are a tax payer (especially a 40% tax payer) then these should be considered. |

This is not a good time to get into bonds. Wait till Gordon Brown finally takes over and we can see where he is headed. Also the property market bubble finally looks likely to collapse. Best to stay in cash for the present. |
