there are no "safe stocks", even KO has been going down. |

Although no stock is completely "safe," those that are less risky are what we call "blue chip" stocks - these companies have been around for a while and are less volatile and are of relatively less risk.
These include GE, Coca-Cola, and Wal-Mart - but there is never any guarantee in the risk of these stocks. You'll probably be holding these stocks for the long-term, and a few years ago, Microsoft and Intel were considered blue-chip. It depends if they still are, but they are obviously not completely predictable. |

How safe? If you mean stocks that are immune from falling in price, there are not any. One to consider is TIP. It is an exchange traded index fund indexed to U S tips bonds. Its price has ranged between about 98 and 108 during the last 12 months. It is currently trading near its high.
A few stocks you might consider that are generally given a low risk rating (that does not mean they are safe) are
MMM has a 2.4% dividend and a 1 year return that is positive.
DEO has a 3.2% dividend and a 1 year return that is positive. Also has the advantage that it is slightly immune from the dollar. A plus.
NSRGY has a 1.2% dividend and a 1 year return that is poitive. This also is slightly immune from the dollar, being a Swiss company. A plus.
There are several pipe line limited partnerships that should be relatively less risky because they transport natural gas and oil which no one has yet figured out how to do without, and they all pay very decent dividends. Here are a few.
KMY 6.3% dividend
ETP 7.3% dividend
SXL 6.3% dividend
None of these are safe. Not a one. But relatively speaking these are safer than most. |

Actually, there are no fully safe stocks, but I can give you some advice:
1) Don't invest in banks, just as a rule (good example: northern rock)
2)Don't invest in overly-massive companies, such as Tesco's- your shares will be worthless unless you buy upwards of 1,000,000 of them
3)For the UK, look at the FTSE 350, as it contains everything in the London Stock exchange that is realtivley large.
4) Go for medium-sized companies, such as co-op or M&S, as their shares are fairly cheap at the moment, and are lmost garanteed to go up. |

It is true, there are no safe stocks, however, some are safer than others.

A safe stock with a lot of upside is Quantas Services (PWR). They are a utilities contractor and have a lock on the marketplace. I recommended all of my clients to buy PWR 2 weeks ago when it was $20/share. It just hit $24/share today and I expect it to keep climbing to above $30 over the next 6-9 months.
They are a safe stock because they are always in business, their competition is limited and their management and earnings numbers are solid. Stick with PWR and you will be looking good!! Thanks |
