What are assets?

This is and interesting question. The short answer is anything that has monetary value. This could be things like real estate, car, jewelery, etc. as someone else said.

However, this definition may get you into trouble. Robert Kiyosaki has redefined assets as meaning something that puts money in your pocket. I like this definition, because as he says a car may be and asset but it also takes money out of your pocket. Your house may be and asset, but it takes money out of your pocket.

A piece of rental property may have expenses, but a positive cash flowing property puts money in your pocket. A stock that pays divdends puts money in your pocket. A certificate of deposits that pays you money is and asset and puts money your pocket.

There are many, many people who own lots of assets, but those assets also have lots of expenses. If you work at accumulating assets per Robert's definition you will grow richer and richer.

They are things that a company owns...such as buildings, equipment, inventory, cash, etc.
They also include things such as money the customers owe the company and intangible items such as patents.

Could be your home, cars, jewelry...anything of value. Money is money. Assets are what you own that has a value on it.
