What are some good things for a young adult ( just turn 18) to invest in?

Listen to Scott.
Low cost index funds in a Roth IRA if you are looking long term. There are some great Exchange Traded Funds (SPY, QQQQ) that have low fees.

However, it does depend on what you are saving for. Good luck!

You have two basic paths you can follow when investing-mutual fund and individual stocks. Unfortunately, most mutual funds have a minimum initial investment that might cause you a problem, but you can often set up a periodic investment (usually around $100/month) that can get you around that. If you can handle that, then you may want to go the individual stock route. Good advice that was given to me once was always buy what you know. So, what kind of soda do you drink, Coke or Pepsi? They both have stock. Like McDonalds? They have it too. Buy what you use and think everyone will always use, and over time it tends to pay off. Just focus on regular investing-put in as much as you can whenever you can! And I would agree-if the money is in a Roth IRA you can put up to 4,000 in it (soon up to 5,000!) and then you don't have to worry about paying any capital gains taxes if your stock picks pay off. Good luck! ;)

Short answer: Low-cost stock index funds in a Roth IRA.

Long answer: It depends on what you're investing for. At your age, this is a great time to start saving for retirement, but you might just be saving up for a car in three years. There are dozens of options available to you either way. It's really too much to answer here. I suggest reading as much as you can about personal finance. Here's a good place to start: http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/

Invest in General Motors (GM), Its at a 5 year low and pays almost 5% dividends. You can find a lot of american companies that are on sale right now. Harley Davidson, Home Depot, Bank of America, etc, etc,

You can start a Roth IRA for as little as $100.00...

Go with and Roth IRA like the first person said. My Aunt gave me this advice when I graduated from high school and gave me my first $100 to put in it. To this day I think it was the best advice ever! You can put unto $4,000.00 a year into a Roth IRA account. Plus if you ever need the money you can take some out. And you will be planning ahead for you future! Good luck!
