stalzer49417 | What are some monopolies? |
|

Monopoly exists when there is no competition. While some people would claim someone like Microsoft is a monopoly, it isn't exactly true, because other companies offer competing products. They just aren't as popular.
Also, by definition, the oil industry can't be a monopoly, because it is not a single company. The same is true of airlines, because there are more than one. When a group of companies control an industry, it might be called an oligopoly, but the term monopoly is reserved for industries that are completely controlled in that area by one single company. In nations where there is only one national airline, it could be considered a monopoly if it is granted exclusive access to certain locations or foreign airlines are restricted from competing directly.
Normally, in most industries, it is impossible for a monopoly to exist for more than a short while unless the government enforces its monopoly power, as it does with local phone service in most areas. Otherwise, competition would enter, and it would no longer be the only company. In addition to phones, we typically also see monopolies granted in garbage collection, electricity delivery, water, cable, and other utility services. Others have mentioned the monopoly granted to Major League Baseball for control of that sport in the U.S. The government also controls a monopoly on home postal delivery. In other countries, governments have a monopoly on certain natural resources, such as Saudi Arabia's oil monopoly there. And, of course, in communist nations like Cuba, the government has an effective monopoly on nearly all products and services. |

There are very few monopolies in the U.S. today because of antitrust laws. The 'Bells' (phone companies) exist today because of the split of a monopoly in the phone industry and Microsoft has made numerous concessions to avoid monopoly status. Those that exist are generally very highly regulated by the government. One example is power and gas companies (e.g. Southern Company in Atlanta). |
