Very simple: Some Companies offer a percentage of their profits every quarter (every 4 months) for people who own their stock.

Keep in mind that I am trying to make it as simple as possible for you.

Basically, if you are a stockholder, you have invested money in a company in exchange for a piece of ownership. Based on this, when the company makes money, they have a choice of reinvesting this money in the company itself, or giving it to the stockholder, the owner. When they give it to the stockholder, it is called a dividend.

stock dividend is a pro-rata distribution of additional shares of a company’s stock to owners of the common stock. A company may opt for stock dividends for a number of reasons including inadequate cash on hand or a desire to lower the price of the stock on a per-share basis to prompt more trading and increase liquidity .

A stock dividend is a pro-rata distribution of additional shares of a company’s stock to owners of the common stock. A company may opt for stock dividends for a number of reasons including inadequate cash on hand or a desire to lower the price of the stock on a per-share basis to prompt more trading and increase liquidity (i.e., how fast an investor can turn his holdings into cash). Why does lowering the price of the stock increase liquidity? On the whole, people are more likely to buy and sell a $50 stock than a $5,000 stock; this usually results in a large number of shares trading hands each day.

How much the company pays you as an incentive to buy stock in their company. Kind of a reward for them doing good and sharing some of that profit with you...an investor in their company.

It's a relatively small about of money that the board of directors of large companies elect to throw back to their stock holders to encourage them to hold on to their stock. Usually around a dollar per share or less. If you own 1,000 shares of stock and they decide to offer 49 cents a share then you will get a check in the mail for $490.00.

When you buy stock in a company they promise to give you a percentage profits.
Those profits are called dividends.
The amount you receive is per share of stock. If the dividend happens to be $1 per share then you get a check for $1 per share of stock you own.

Stock dividend's another name is stock split. For example, a company declares stock dividends of 1 share per each share you own. If you owned 100 shares, you will be given 100 shares which make up your stock holding to 200 shares. It's the same as 2 for 1 stock split.

When it states stock "dividends," it sounds like you are getting something extra like cash dividends, but in reality, the total value of the share holding remains the same since each share has been diluted in half.
