What are the best emerging market funds to invest in at the present time?
I'm a guy exhausted by working with gang members in London and wanting to take a sabbatical - so decided to invest 7k in emerging market funds to see if I can fund a year off to rest! Which emerging market funds are performing well and could turn 7k into enough to live on for a year or so? Uhem, I'm serious!

Check out the following:-

Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust

UBS Global Emerging Markets Unit Trust

First State Global Emerging Markets Unit Trust

I invested through Hansard Europe Ltd in Dublin. They have this great fund which is run by Nomura called
"Nomura Global Emerging Markets 80% Protected Portfolio"

This gives me access to 6 good Global Emerging Markets funds, while at the same time being 80% protected so I can maximum lose 20% of my investment.

It works - the correction in May this year cost me a 5% loss on this fund. I also have investment fund in Eastern Europe. I lost 17% on those.

But dont assume that you can live on an investment of 7K. This is a long (> 5 year) investment. If we have another correction like in May or the US dollar dives again, you could experience a capital loss.

go east for that, western market is flat. India and china is the best market for investments.

Serious? Yeah right. Okay, try iron ore mines in Chile.

Invest in an Asian market index tracker fund. It is less volatile and and has lower charges than managed funds.

You can get some pretty good returns, but it might take a while to turn £7k into a year's money (unless you can live for a year on less than £10k!).

I've invested in a few, the best of which were:
Jupiter Emerging Europe opportunities (up 128% in 28 months)
JP Morgan New Europe (up 229% in 3.5 years)
First State Global Emerging Markets A (up 59% in 2 years)
Threadneedle Latin America (up 113% in 27 months)

But those results are PAST- there's absolutely no guarantee they'll carry on like that. India's not a bad call. China's been sluggish lately, so might be due for a bounce. But it's all high risk: don't invest ALL your savings in these markets.

I hope you are kidding.

They are indeed "hot" at the moment but what is hot today may very well be ice cold tomarrow. You need to keep that in mind.

Among the closed end funds year to date returns are:

Indonesia funds are up 46%
china funds are up 40%
russia funds are up 36%
latin america funds are up 24%
singapore funds are up 21%

Some good ones mentioned - I prefer China, and India, who are both booming at present, the reason being, they have stable governments.

Well good luck on your financial goals there.

Here is the emerging markets fund I recommend:
T Rowe Price: PRMSX

Here's a good Emerging Markets ETF:
BLDRS ETF: ADRE
