Stocks in companies which are growing their earnings, with manageable debt, which pay a dividend, have provided a return on equity greater than 15%.

GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE)
GE is the most undervalued and oversold stock of the 30 companies listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Its P/E ratio is 6.35. That’s ridiculously low for a blue chip.

GE has continuously increased its dividends over the past 5 years (2004-8). The CEO Jeff Immelt defended the dividend on Friday saying it was “ a good return to investors in this moment of uncertainty. But we’re not straining in order to pay it … We’ve got lots of cash.” GE’s current yearly dividend yield is 10.30%.

When GE released its report last Friday, the company made a net profit of about $18b in 2008 compared to $22.5b in 2007. This isn’t exactly like Citigroup that posted a loss in 2008. Warren Buffet bought into General Electric and Goldman Sachs after the sell off in October last year.

IBM
It’s already on a confirmed steady up-trend. Look at a daily candlestick chart of IBM with volume. On Jan 21, on the market open the shares jumped and rallied during the session. The volume of shares more than doubled from prevous days as buyer demand forced it up after IBM’s 2008 report and 2009 forcast were released to the market.

IBM increased both its profit and dividends in 2008 and looks to do so in 2009

Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) have also been winners during Wall Streets reporting season. These two stocks are just starting to rise after their reports were released to the market last week.

There is no reason to believe we've bottomed, so those who are telling you to "load up" are trusting in earlier "rebounds" that don't necessarily, if at all, apply now.

The thing that is guiding stocks now is technical patterns. Learn how to read them, and use same day and short term trades, not buy and hold. There are hugh amounts of cash on the sidelines for a reason - they haven't seen any signals yet to indicate they should be back in the market. Yet, banking stocks dropped 28% on the UYG last Tuesday, while springing back 23% the next day. It's inverse fund (they're both "double" the volatility of the market) is SKF, which profits when it loses. Don't trade that fund if you don't know what you're doing, or you risk getting wiped out - but going into earnings the last couple quarters, the banks have been hammered, then they have a very short period where they spring back. That's great if you're able to be at your screen the full trading period, but not a viable or smart option if you're using "fire and forget" entry techniques.

High quality stocks are out there for strong short term profits. Profits equivalent to a year's investment in the "old" markets. But you simply have to know your trend and demand indicators, not just a "name" of a "hot tip". Take your time, do your homework, and use stops appropriately. Anything else and you can easily hurt your capital position beyond repair. Read "Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom" by Van Tharp, and the additional references he offers. Read IBD

None unless you know to read the charts to manage your risk so each trade risks 1% of your fund.
The average punter losses their money because they enter risky trades by jumping on a band wagon.
The pros only do low risk - high return trades so profit even when they get it wrong 50%of the time
