What are the key challenges faced by foreign investors in a developing country?

Relations with the local government. Cultural barriers which complicate everything from labor relations to how your product or service is marketed. Poor or nonexistant infrustructure for transportation, communications sanitation etc. Availability of qualified/educated labor. Bringing in talent from developed nations for technical or managerial experitise can be costly. I work in Afghanistan and you better believe they had to come up with some cash to get me here.

Forget political correctness. The major problem is the endemic corruption in all strata of such societies.

The other problem is currency risk. Currencies in developing countries are notoriously volatile and devaluation quite frequent.

Randall
Key challenges for investing in any country are to know the laws and understand the culture. Moving to a different environment always take a bit of adapting. Developing countries though may not be as structured as a developed countries. It takes time to get things done and 'knowing people' is a common way of getting things done. You will also be exposed to currency risks, and special taxes as well as different work ethics. In the financial markets, volatility is normal and risk is high. Capital restrictions are also common.
