What are the reasons why people invest?
Not the basic reason, that people want an economic gain. Or they just want to get money, but more detailed answers and reasons. Like for example, they want financial security. But please as I say again, please provide detailed reasons and different case scenarios for investing and how it can make them profitable or make them benefit in some form of way.

When ones productive years are over with, the main source of income at that point comes from three possible sources. 1. government subsidies (social security), 2. private pensions 3. investment income. Many actually do not have access to private pensions. So if after retiring if one wishes to live at more than a subsistence level, it is necessary to have some investment income in addition to government subsidies. That is the main reason that many people invest. Another reason is that they have some future need for funds such as for example sending their children to college. That is a popular reason for investing. Another reason is perhaps the desire to start ones one business at some point in the future and become ones own boss. At one point in time some years ago, those planning to get married would invest for that potentiality. That does not occur so much today with the advent of credit cards. Another popular reason for investing is to accumulate sufficient capital for a down payment on a house. That at one time was a main reason for investing prior to easy credit. I believe that this reason might become popular again very soon.

If they didn't invest, they wouldn't be able to buy a thing. Even if someone takes and spends dollars, the person is investing in dollars and then investing in goods purchased with the dollars.

They invest from dollars into other forms of wealth for different reasons. One is to protect themselves from inflation, another is to attempt to get as much interest or yield as possible, another is to have an investment that can be used in the future in the event that dollars go way down and are not worth nearly as much anymore.

There are those who like the thrill of the ups and downs, there are those with extra money who want to buy into something with intrinsic value like gold in an effort to guarantee having something of value in the future, there are those who trust businesses to perform and yield them nice dividends, there are those who want diversity to be somewhat prepared for all sorts of scenarios.

Some of the best investments might include the investor's own education, commodities the investor need's, things of intrinsic value, some cash for liquidity, and during good economic times either businesses (for example the stock market) or loans (for example, bond funds).

Investing is probably the best way to get money without really having to do anything. Financial Security is a plus but most people just want the money. When Im legal damn straight Im getting right into stock broking.

Besides the financial freedom which it brings, investing is fast becoming a priority or at least a choice for people from all strata of society because
1)Increase of business minded mentality. It is getting easy for laymen to understand investments and risks.
2)Gambling nature
3)Sounds cool:indeed people find it hip to invest in stocks , estates etc.
4)Engaging; People find it a mind's game to invest - you constantly need to tickle you brain cells
5)Technology is making it more convenient.
