Jen M | What are you going to do if/when the stock market crashes? |
I'm really curious to see what other people plan on doing if and/or when the stock market crashes in the U.S... Also, feel free to express how you feel about the whole thing. Turn it into a debate, comfort each other, or whatever. I just wanna know what other people are thinking. And when I say crash.. I don't just mean it in the sense of it plummeting down, I mean crash as in really hit rock bottom. |

Buy up all those cheap stocks! It'll be a great time to buy once we hit bottom. |

Hubby and I sold our house and cashed out our retirement funds already so we have cash and can buy up all the bargains that nobody else can afford. |

Most americans have never lived through an economic collapse like this. This is not comparable to anything any country has experienced, because it's global, so production, salaries, supplies, health care, education, and just about every other aspect of life will be affected by this, it's like a circle of life of finances - everything is connected.
So it is difficult to say what anyone of us will do, because it is impossible to predict how it will turn out. The best suggestion I can give is educate yourself and stay close with your family, friends and even neighbors. In tough times like these human connection is more valuable then all the preparations in the world. |

To be honest the stock market really is crashing right now - the plummet is comparable to 1987 and even 1929. I have cash set aside for purchases that has been the majority of my portfolio for awhile now... I don't know when the market will find a bottom, but I will be buying stocks for the long-term and using all my cash for purchases eventually. |

I have $20K in my checking account and $140K in a 401k (money market).
After 9/11, when the stock market crashed, I had about $40K in a 401k. In about 2002, I switched to the high-risk, high-yield stock fund and saw my 401k go to about $130K over the next 5 years.
About a year and a half ago, I switched the 401k from the high-risk, high-yield stocks to the money market. Over the last year, I got about 3% yield on the money market. But, the stock fund I was in went down over 30% in the last 9 months.
So, some time in the next coupla-few months (whenever the market calms down), I'm going to put at least 50% of the 401k into the high-risk, high-yield stock funds again. Now that I'm 45, I don't think I'll risk the whole thing again. But, when the market is at rock bottom, the only way it can go is up. It worked for me before. So, I think I'll give it another go this time around. |

im going to carry on not giving a $hit about any of it. its just a bunch of numbers and bull$hit at the end of the day... there's more to life. frankly i am getting sick of hearing about it, i wish it would just crash so we can get it over with.
actually, having just read N.C.'s answer, that is an excellent idea. |

I really do not plan on changing my lifestyle in anyway. I work at Wal Mart and I really feel secure in my job. I have a secure place to live. When it starts going back up after it hits rock bottom I will definitely start investing more though. There is profit to be made when companies stock decline so much it has no where to go but up. |
