Use internet banking www.ingdirect.com.
It is safest and easiest way to invest and save money

A large national bank with a branch where you are located that offers on-line banking. Avoid strictly on-line banks and try to stick with a bank registered in the United States. As PepsiLime already noted, Bank of America fits these standards pretty nicely. Is one in your area?

A long-term relationship with a large bank is a good thing to have because you will probably need their financial support in the future.

Bank of America offers 'online' banking. You can transfer money from a checking to a savings and vice versa. You can pay bills as well. I've been using it for years and it's very safe and convenient.

If you need to get a copy of a check to prove you've made a payment, you can get a copy from the online banking, both front and back. If you forget who you wrote a check to, that's not a problem either. It shows the check number when the check is returned to the bank. The check number is a link to a photo of your check. It also shows what's been paid and what's pending in your checking account.

What's not to like?

For you, find one that has a free checking accounts or at least free student checking accounts. You can find information about specific banks and what they offer on their own sites. Free checking means they do not charge you a monthly maintenance fee even if you don't have money in the account. There's no minimum balance.

When you find one that offers this, I highly recommend you check to see if they allow you to download bank information directly into Quicken. Quicken is an extremely effective financial management program that makes keeping track of your money very easy and very organized. The program itself costs a bit and you may not want it yet, but if you end up getting it in a few years you'll want to be able to import information directly.

You can see what financial institutions allow you to do that at this site: http://financialsoft.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=financialsoft&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fweb.intuit.com%2Fpersonal%2Fquicken%2Fsearch.cfm%3Ftype%3Dbasic%26qwid%3Dqw1500%26amp%3Bqmid%3Dqm1501%26qbid%3Dqb1600%26amp%3Bqbmid%3Dqbm1600

Learn to manage your money well as early as possible! Good habits will make you rich and bad ones will make you poor. Good luck.

PS. Yes, online banking is a must. It's so necessary I almost forgot it's an option to not have online banking.

open up the local national one like, i live in scotland and down the street is the royal bank of scotland, which i have a account there. im 17 and its great for a student

PepsiLime
Probably a local bank would be best, they would more than likely be better suited for you and would end up knowing you better than a large large bank. But without knowing where in the country you live, I can't give you any bank names. Probably only one that would be somewhere around you no matter where you live is Bank of America.
