Basically, you should invest in companies that:

1) Have a good "cash flow." This includes companies like Google (GOOG), Nike (NKE), GE, Wal-Mart (WMT), Pfizer (PFE), Coca-Cola (KO), Bank of America (BAC), and many many others.

2) Regularly and consistently increase their dividends. This includes companies such as NKE, WMT, PFE, KO, etc.

3) Have a time-tested business model.

Best of luck. Right now, I think there is phenomenal opportunity to buy in companies that are severely undervalued; that is, are trading at 5-7 times their P/E ratio.

I am currently investing in KO, GOOG, NKE, GE, BAC, PFE.

That depends on whether you want to invest or gamble.
I would buy select Canadian Banks, pipeline companies, insurance companies and oil stocks. I only want ones with a long history of increasing dividends and good dividends.
In Canada banking is well regulated ( unlike the US), so banks are not allowed to go bust. Many insurance companies are well run. In the short term I think oil stocks will suffer but in the long run they will do very well. Oil will fuel all trucks and most cars for a long time to come.
Oil companies will be there to supply the fuel

lookaround
If I had the money I would invest it in companies doing research on technology for the environmental feild. I wouldn't invest in just one thought. I don't have the money so I haven't done the specific research. But I would definitely focus on water filtration, and emergency response implimentationing planning. Also I would look into the fields semiconductors.

I think the current market is a trader's market and long term investments should not be made. Therefore nothing should be bought now. However we are approaching a time--possibly in 2009-- when almost anything may be bought for a profit. Personally I'd stick with broad leveraged indexes, such as SSO, QLD, BGU, TNA. But not yet.

For the time being, THINKING is the best posture.
