What do they mean by "diversify"?
I have a 401K (balanced), real estate (paying for it), mutual fund (stocks, bonds), and some savings in a 4% interest account, am I diversified? Am I missing something?

Check out something like money magazine for ideas. Mostly - 401 is for tax free growth - at your age it should not be a balanced 401 but heavily oriented to stocks. Outside of the 401 is where to hold bonds - preferrably tax-free muni's, real estate investment does not mean owning a house - its buying into reit's and holding companies. Step 1 in whole investing - establish 6 month safety fund, then monthly deposits into mutual funds (low or no fee), then after you have built a base - continue on.

Yes, you are diversified pretty well... There can't be better definition of "Diversification" than you!

No. You are not diversified if all your investments are in dollar denominated investments.

Buy foreign currencies.

And worry less about yourself and care for and give to the poor.

Diversification means to have a portfolio with investments in different asset classes, like stocks, bonds, real estate, fixed income and international stocks and bonds/ The key is that investments in different asset classes are uncorrelated with each other and react differently to different market conditions. So all your investments arent down at the same time.

You are missing foreign and emerging markets. Also, you might want some REITs. Also, do your bonds include TIPs and High Yield?

Here's an article from the WSJ that teaches diversification:
