ram pra | What do they mean when they said the fund beat the benchmark? |

Whatever the fund may be, it will be tracked against a benchmark or standard. For e.g. in India BSE Sensex, NSE Nifty, etc. are index of stocks, which will be used as benchmarks. You invest in these companies in the same percentage, and also in the fund that uses this as benchmark.
If your fund gives you more returns than the index, then they say that fund beat benchmark. That means the fund manager is managing the fund better than the benchmark index. |

It means that the fund in which your investing has made more money or percentage than the average.
In short, your fund is doing good! |

All funds are expected to outperform the market in general i.e for a given period, give more return. The market in general means the various indices like Sensex; Nifty or indices for broader market or sector. Depending on the above sectors the fund operates, they benchmark with the sectoral index and aim to outperform them. When it really happens, they say, "the fund beat the benchmark." |

An index (a composite figure like BSE Sensex,BSE Teck Index, BSE PSU idex,BSE Dollex,BANKEX etc.) becomes a benchmark index when you choose it as the standard against which to measure your own portfolio's performance over time.
if a fund suppose a fund portfolio of consist of bank shares mainly perform (portfolio's shares price) well then the BANKEX that means FUND BEAT THE BENCHMARK
THERE ARE SO MANY EXAMPLE LIKE THAT. |

The "Benchmark" is a predicted amount. If the fund beat the "Benchmark" it means they got more than they had predicted that they would. |

"The ultimate measure of the efficiency of an index fund is its "tracking error" (TE). This is the difference between the return of the fund and its benchmark. If an index fund is doing its job perfectly, then its TE will be a small negative number, equal to the opposite of its expense ratio. For example, the Vanguard Index Trust 500 has an expense ratio of 0.20%. If it is performing as advertised, it should thus have a return 0.20% less than the S&P500 each and every year. In fact, it pretty much does that. (Well, actually slightly better."

A benchmark is a predicted level, so if it beat the benchmark (for price, sales, volume etc.) then it did better than was predicted. |

From what I can understand, what you are asking is "What do they mean when they say 'beating the benchmark?'"
(a mutual fund in your case).
If that is so , the answer is "beating the established or accepted level of achievement or difficulty set by someone else so far- in any sport or examination or any business or any other performance by an individual or a team or even a product."
If you meant to ask about any mutual funds, the same logic applies. That means, the fund beat all other records so far in a specified area like NAV (net asset value) etc.

S.Suresh |
