What do you do if you had some shares but can't remember which or find the certificates?

Er - trying various registrars is a long shot without at least knowing the company name. If you can work out the name then at least you can find out the particular registrar to approach and inquire about any holding and get any share certificates reissued.

In order to trace a shareholding, you need the original company name, albeit that the company may have changed its name or been subject to a merger.

A registrar would be able to advise youwhere the register is held. The registrar will then be able to research their records to ascertain what had happened to the shareholder's certificates.

In 1990 there was an offer for sale by HM Government of the regional electricity companies. Since that date a number of mergers and name changes have taken place and the registers are maintained by various registrars.

Whilst you may not be able to find the share certificate, you may hold other documentation which will enable the registrar to locate the holding ie: tax vouchers/offer documents/contract note.

If you used a brokerage, check with them.
Otherwise, you're SOL.

You should be getting company reports sent to your address every six months, so you can wait till the next one arrives, to find out the name. You can then write to the company registrar, explaining your situation. They can issue a replacement certificate, for a fee.
