Investment is really investment analysis and portfolio management. Aside from the theoritical aspects which may be learnt from a good book on the subject; investment is done through various investment avenues which have their respective assets and financial instruments.
For example, in the stock market you have financial instruments like stocks, futures and options (the latter two being derivatives). In real estate you have real assets like land and building and financial instruments like REITs. In forex markets you have the forex futures; while in the commodities markets you have commodity futures.
It is the investor's personal choice which investment avenues he would like to invest in and through. This would largely depend on his investment objectives and time horizon.
Sincerely,
Akash

If you are in the US, you would not pay 50% in taxes unless you earned over $250,000 a year. If you are trying to earn a living as an investor, you have a lot to learn. Remember, you can also lose as an investor. |

For me I invest in micro-cap companies, because I can pick them for less then they are worth. |

Your question isn't clear. Are you asking for a definition of investing? Your question is mixing metaphors. |

I only invest in stocks that are in an upward trend. But the market has to be in the same trend. It may be a while before that happens again. Warren Buffett said a few weeks ago that it is time to get back in. Looking at the dow over the last year or more, it appears to have hit a bottom. But its real difficult for me to trust. |

I would recommend Forex trading as the Forex Trading Market has a daily turnover of about 3 trillion dollars ($3,000,000,000,000), thus making it the biggest market in the world. Forex traders trade exclusively "Over the Counter" (OTC), meaning that all deals take place between the buyer and the seller, with no stock-market mediation. This unique aspect allows the private traders, with or without experience, to trade in a market in which companies and corporations actively participate as well. This market's great liquidity allows the trader to withdraw his funds at anytime. Furthermore, the continuity of trade within the Forex Market, allows traders to trade anywhere at any time. Although the movements within this market are small, by leveraging his/her funds, the trader can make a substantial profit with only a relatively small investment. |
