It's just the opposite of 'having all your eggs in one basket' Better to have your eggs in several baskets, so if you drop one and the eggs break, you still have the other one. The diversification could be many things. Geographical, sector, asset class etc.
The diversification must be right. It's not a question of variety. Say you like the banking sector. Instead of buying one bank you buy two. Why? Well, one bank may be more exposed to sub-prime than the other. There must be a good reason, there must be some correlation between the two investments. And as someone once said; If the basket is a good one then.....
If you diversify or hedge too much you will hedge out any potential profit. |

For exmaple, U r carrying 1 lac re and going to another place........It will be safe if u r keepng 25k in 4 different place and it will be very much safe if u keep 10k in 10 place..in the same logic, U hav eto diversify ur investment........

Spreading you money out. Investing in different categories. It is how people protect their money. You can watch Jim Cramer's show called Mad Money and learn alot of good stuff. |

Diversification means you are not putting all your money in one basket.
You are splitting your investment into various different schmes in order to reduce your risk. |

You have to understand the law of average for the meaning of Diversification. Your investments should be spread out in such a manner that at the end of the day you gain some may be you loose some. But your objectives should be more in gaining sectors than loosing sectors.
In one word you diversify your investments in different categories; Large/mid/small caps. Its a mixture of various stocks or funds; Equity Diversified, Debt Funds, Bonds etc. |
