It's a measure of success in the economy.
It has to do with how much as a whole the country is producing goods (in economic terms this is called Gross Domestic Product (GDP). When a country's GDP declines for more than 6 months economists call it a recession.
So, the 'US is going into recession' means that we're producing less stuff (so we're not making as much money) as we could be (in a healthy economy the GDP should be continually increasing). |

It means 2 or more consecutive quarters of slow economic growth. Businesses don't grow much, consumer optimism is down. The reason for all of this is the fact that people buy things that they can't afford. When they default on payments, banks are in a no win situation. As real estate falls, so goes the market and the economy. |

It means people have lost faith that they are going be as well off in the future as they are now, so they're not spending. Not much sold means less tax for the government and less profit for companies. Businesses won't fund new projects with that sort of atmosphere,so gradually the whole caboosh goes downhill.Jobs get lost if companies don't sell so much,adding to the woes. It can have a world-wide knock-on effect,because American importers and exporters are stuck with it. Money markets,stock exchanges,and such are kept alive by people having faith in the future. When that dies,so do the markets. |

It means the economy is fecked. Blame Bush and his cronies. Thousands will lose their jobs and their homes. Factories will close by the score. Banks will fold. Serves them right. At least here in the UK we know how to run an economy. |
