Short selling is the selling of a stock that the seller doesn't own. More specifically, a short sale is the sale of a security that isn't owned by the seller, but that is promised to be delivered. That may sound confusing, but it's actually a simple concept. |

It means you've borrowed a security (your stockbroker will do this for you automatically if you sell short) and sold it. It can benefit you if the value of the shorted shares falls (e.g. pretty much any financial stock in 2007), allowing you to buy them at a lower price and close out the short at a profit.
Note that you're responsible for dividends on the shares you've borrowed until you close out the short. Your account will show a rise in cash if you short shares (by the amount of the sale). |

Selling short means borrowing and selling a stock that you don't own. You do it with the expectation of buying it back later, at a lower price. You have an obligation to buy it back and replace it at some point...in fact whoever lent it to you can ask for it back at any point in time. You also have to pay any dividends the company pays during the period you have shorted the stock to the person you borrowed the shares from, and there can be additional charges for shares in heavy demand.
For instance, you may sell short 100 shares of XYZ at $50/share. If you later rebuy the stock at $40/share, you just made $1,000 because you got $1,000 more for selling it ($5,000) than it cost you to buy it back ($4,000). If on the other hand, you buy it back at $60, you just lost $1,000, because the $6K it cost you to buy it back was more than the $5K you got when you initially sold it.
Short sales are secured by the sale proceeds plus 50% of the sale amount. So if you sell 100 shares of XYZ at $50, the broker is going to set aside the $5,000 proceeds plus $2,500 in margin. You have to maintain 130% of the value of the shorted stock in the account. So in our example, if the stock goes to $60, and you have only $7,500 in the account, you are going to get a margin call for $300 ($6,000 short * 130% = $7,800 in cash required - $7,500 in the account to start with = $300 additional margin required. If you don't post the additional margin, your broker will buy back the shares immediately.

They are tricky but, lets see - establish a thresh hold that is if a stock that you have invested in losses two to four percent of its price you sell to avoid losses and if it gains ten or five percent of its price you sell to maximize on the profits. lets say that you have invest an amount of $500 and the stock gains and you have $550 you sell gain of $50; ok now the price drops by four percent to $480 you sell that to avoid a 'might be' loss if the market falls by 7 or more percent this works both ways with the profits. there are more strategies for selling short. |

Short selling basically means selling a stock which you do not own.
It works when you tell your broker that you want to short a particular stock. Your broker would help you by borrowing the required stock and quantity from other sources and sell it to the market.
Please note that you may incur on-going charges for short selling as it works like a loan. The longer you short, the higher the charges.
It applies the principle of "buy low, sell high" but this time you "sell high first, then buy low later".
If you are bearish on stock, you may consider shorting it then.
On a word of caution, shorting tends to be higher risk than longing (the normal buy first, sell later). |
