carty285 | What does a conservative investor look for? |
|

Arbitrage

Depends how conservative. Very conservative is probably putting the money in short-term fixed-income type investments. Long term is probably more a mixture of bonds and stocks. You really have to give more information about the situation and the time horizon, etc. |

First of all, I wondering how you know you are a conservative investor. Anyway...
There are ranges of conservative investors some are very conservative to just plain old conservative. Those are GENERALLY the people on a fixed income. Since, they have to manage everything they have on a fixed income maybe a retiree for example they cannot withstand a loss. Those people may like things such as Cd's, money market accounts, bonds, and fixed annuities. (things that barely keep up with inflation at 3.1%)
A conservative to moderate investor would be interested in a principle protected mutual fund (high fees), fixed annuities, and variable annuities in conservative separate accounts, if that makes any sense. On a good day, sometimes, they'll even invest in a conservative mutual fund with a good long term track record.
The most important thing is that you stay diversified.
I think you should sit down with a financial planner and get a financial plan done so you will know your true risk tolerance and also the strengths and weaknesses associated with your finances. |

A conservative investor looks for someone they can trust.
A conservative investor is practical, and does their homework.
A conservative investor will self educate long and hard in the field of investing before they invest.
A conservative investor is patient, and will be wise not to do what everyone advises them to do.
A conservative investor likes to take control of their own cash. |

Arbitrage is right on target. Most professionals would consider a conservative investor to be one with limited exposure to the volatility of the stock market (but still some-you need it for growth!), and the majority of their investments in more static vehicles like bonds or money markets. Historically speaking, a conservative allocation of 20% stocks, 30% short term instruments (like money markets), and 50% bonds has yielded over 6% annually. When I say historically, I mean viewing the market from 1926-2005. Obviously, different time periods will yield more or less, but the overall average isn't a bad expectation. Whether or not you should BE a conservative style of investor is predicated on various parts of your personal situation-something you may want to review with a broker! :) |
