cg198421 | What does a recession mean for people in every day life? |
How would it affect the every day lives of people who don't have shares or pensions linked to the stock market? Additional Details I know what a recession is... but no-one seems to say what it means for every day people, not business or investors, just normal people! |

How a recession impacts you is based upon your personal circumstances. As long as a the average person keeps their job, they will not see a tremendous impact from a recession. Because of less economic activity, prices for many things (such as energy) will fall because of less demand. Other prices may fall as companies compete in a dwindling marketplace. If you lose your job, then it can be very difficult to find another when many companies may be tightening their belt. From an investing standpoint, a fall in the stock market gives the average person with a Roth IRA or 401k the opportunity to buy more shares for the same price. If you're not within 7 to 10 years of retirement, this could very well benefit you in the long run. Good luck to you. |

Assuming it's not stagflation (recession and inflation) and ssuming they keep their jobs (I expect to keep mine) things can be very good...prices tend to not go up very much if at all (have u noticed gas prices the last couple weeks are dropping like rocks)...I've been thru 2 real recessions and one mini one since I started working and as I never lost my job it was smooth sailing...it pays to position yourself thru school/college to have one of the "good" professions. |

businesses will become more competitive, lay off staff
and lower prices.
if it's bad, prices will come down because everyone will
be spending cautiously.
currently it has been a boom time and all prices have
been inflated (real estate, shares, groceries, clothes).
only dumb****s will lose their homes.
it's actually good for poor people who had nothing to lose.
if you have any money in the bank, you can make a
killing when the share market bottoms out.
a lot depends on how slow the recovery is. |

The effect on "regular people" ..not much if at all..they wouldn't feel the effects that those with a vested interest in the market is.
The fear that mass layoffs and wages spiraling down and total economic collapse is just uneducated panic....but this lower market could be good news for those that need to find some long term investments and didn't have alot of money to do so before. |

Everything will cost you more, inflation will rise, negative equity in your house and less money in your pocket. Interest rate will fall to allow people to borrow more cheaply and therefore have more money to spend. |

for the average person a recession can mean...
increase in the cost of goods
tightening of belts (cutting back on luxuries etc),
possible redundancies and unemployment,
debt
repossession of home
possible bankruptcy
The above is what can happen to normal people. It causes stress and even the breakdown of marriages and families |

Well a slow-growth economy means that people have much less money to spend and there is a lot of nervousness in trying to find the next job. |
