I'm assuming that you've already looked it up in the dictionary, so I'm guessing that you want a definition in how it relates to business and finance since this is the category you've placed the question in.

An asset is basically something you have of value that makes you money. Its opposite would be a liability, something you have that costs you money. For instance, if you own a business, and you're putting more money into it than you have coming out from it, it becomes a liability. But if you have a business, that's already paid for itself and that makes more money than it costs to run it, it's an asset.

Get it? Got it? Good. :)

depends if you think like the majority

majority think some thing of value you control

investor's think some thing that makes you money on a regular basis
i don't class it as a asset unless it is giving me a income including my house

Dagger_SA

I would define an asset a bit more narrowly then most would. To me, an asset is something that makes you money. Could be rental property, stocks, bonds, savings account, business equipment, etc.

However I would not call things like a personal car an asset, as they cost you money. However a truck used in your business would be considered an asset as it helps make you money.

Also a home is sort of iffy. As we've learned, they go down in value too, plus they cost you money to keep and maintain.

An Asset is

I Any item of value.
A car
Property House Flat etc
Any antique may be an asset
Gold and Jewellery
Valuable paintings
all the above amd more any possession with surplus value is an asset
if a house is £100000 and the loan is £50000 your asset would be £50000
