If your job offers it, start up a 401K account. Your empolyer will match up to a certain percentage (like 3-4% of your yearly salary). That money is yours with no strings attached.
Short term investmetn would be CD's (certificate of deposit) from a bank. You give them say 500 dollars for a period of one year and they give you a 5% return. But, if you keep rolling th money over year after year you are earning interest on the interest. You will not have to pay taxes on that money until you close the CD out.
