cody c | What does the stock market crash mean in laymonds terms? |
what does the stock market crash mean in laymonds terms? hypothetically if the stock market in america went from where it is at now which is around 9000 points, and plunged to 6000 or even to zero, what does that REALLY mean? would a candy bar cost like 20 dollars? would we go into chaos, or would everything kind of stay normal? is this the end of days? haha just kidding. but really? what does this mean? thanks.. |

Right now all of the turmoil is caused by companies having a hard time barrowing money and investors are panicing and selling their stocks. If the market were to crash to 0 that would mean bankruptcy of all the companies. Fear not, this is not going to happen. I think we will see the averages fall a bit more and then things will slowly return to normal. Too many people out there will be interested in getting bargain stocks, the market will return in time. |

The stock market will go to zero if everyone decides that they want to be subsistence farmers or if we all decide we only want to buy things from local family businesses.
I do not believe that will happen.
Stocks have value because corporations are expected to pay dividends from their profits to shareholders or they are expected to buy back the shares.
Also shareholders elect the management. |

I say the stock market has been over valued with paper instead cash since the early 1990's
whats going on now is a giant correction with values on paper being wiped out and corporations being valued with real cash
I say there is a silver lining over this, the corporations that produce and make a good product that everybody needs and wants will come out stronger, and the corporations that can't produce will go outta business, only the strong will survive |

Obviously you are young and that is a very good thing. The world has righted itself and is still adjusting a bit, but it will be all right.
If you want a candy bar and it is $50 then go online and figure out how to make one cheap and get all those hungry kids to buy or sell it for you.
Take that money you make and invest it cheap into companies who have $500mil or more into their companies and over the next 20 years you will make many millions of $'s.
Boy, do I wish I was you, it is going to be fun. |

I thought there was DEflation during the Great Depression after the 1929 stock market collapse? So few people had any money or jobs that spending was almost nill.. Suppliers and merchants had to lower their prices to even make a sale.. Isn't that Deflation? I know there were massive lay-offs because a lot of the business couldn't afford payroll or went out of business entirely.. Unemployment was something like 25% back then.. If I remember right, the market lost something like 12% initially and then over the course of two years during the "Great Depression" stocks ended up loosing an average of nearly 90% if I remember reading that correctly..
HOPEFULLY, that won't happen now.. I don't know what it means with the world's markets all going down at once though to such an extent. I don't think that's ever happened before? Hopefully, things can turn around somewhat or at least not get too much worse...

First off, it's "layman", as in lay-man, ie, every man's terms.
Second, yes, runaway inflation would mean that dollar could become valueless. That is exactly what happened in the crash of 1929. The stock market lost almost all its value in about a week. Companies that were perfectly health, excellent value with fine assets, went under because everyone was scared to death to loan money. So unemployment went up, which means the dollar continued to lose money, etc etc etc. A candybar went from 5 cents to 25 cents - but if you made 10 dollars a week and it dropped to 2 dollars a week, that is far worse than your candy bar costing $20 today. It was chaos. For many people around the world it was the end of days. And it remained that way for 12 YEARS, until WWII.
It's not 1929, and we have a far greater understanding of financial markets today than they did back then, but the fact is, nothing, not even WWII, was more devastating to the country than the financial collapse of 1929. Maybe the civil war. Maybe. |
