Matthew M | What factors can cause a stock to rise even if the company posts lower earnings ? |

First, were the earnings just lower, or were they lower than what was expected? Sometimes a company is expected to have a low earnings report, or even a loss. But if the "low" earnings is better than the expectation the stock will likely rise in price.
Second, why were they low? Sometimes a company will have lower earnings because of a one time charge. After investors assess the details of the earnings report, they realize things are as bad as the first look appeared.
Third, as another mentioned, what is the company's forecast. Most companies have bad quarters. But if they have reasonable explanations and plans to correct it, the positive outlook will probably result in a price rise.
Fourth, sometimes an analyst report or news item will be released about the same time. That may override the earnings announcement.
The individual is at a bit of a disadvantage with earnings reports. Even though he has the same information available, he is not likely to digest it in the context of the industry and overall market as the institutional investors as quickly. |

most important thing to remember about stock prices is that they are based on FUTURE expected cash flows or earnings. |

1) Short covering if earnings were not as bad as expected.
2) A brokerage upgrade.
3) Upbeat company guidance. |

Better prospects going forward. Stock valuation is based on future cash flows. Past earnings are history.. |

There are many reasons why a company posts lower earnings. For example there is a big writeoff of debt. Or the company decide to pay in full certain projects instead of continuing with the loan (this greatly dpds on the interest rate environment).
All this does not affect the daily returns of companies.
Such an event would mean that lower earnings are just temporary. Thus based on investors expectations, the stocks may have rise (if it is undervalued by investors) on Expectations that the profit nxt few quarters would go back to 'normal'.
There are other reasons like expectations of a merger or takeover. Decrease in interest rate as seen in the US and many more. One must note that the stock market is an expectations market where the valuation of companies are based on the expectations (most of the time) of investors in the market. |

2. a big contract has just been received
3. a new product/medicine has been approved for marketing
4. a new ceo has taken over |

If they are in a strong sector and there is a strong bull market, they will get carried up with the tide as long as they are a good company. On the other side you can get a google or a crox that are good companies that got stuck in a rip tide during earnings and they were pulled down. The bounce back, but it takes time. |
