Mr Genius
What happened to the stock market?!?
I leave for 2 weeks and look what happens! Well, won't somebody tell me what happened? Because it seems that many very stable stocks in various sectors are down to half their 52-week low!

Have you heard of the sub prime mortgage problem. Basically people wanted to buy houses worth $800,000 and the banks let them get away with a small down payment. Now people started being deeply in debt. Instead of paying for the rest of the house they pretty much said screw this and gave their houses up. Now when there is a lot of something on a market, the prices will go down. Banks ended up losing money in the long run. Now when USA's fifth largest bank goes bankrupt that causes panic on the stock market and everybody decides to sell their stocks. As I already said when there is a lot of something on the market the price goes down, and this is what happened to the stock market.

recession fear.

The Random Idiot
People don't believe in the bailout plan. The institutions can figure out the real value of the financial sector stocks. They make up a large percentage of the market and now they aren't worth the paper there stock is printed on. When the institutions sell the fit his the shan. When the fit hits the shan then everyone runs for cover. There are some real bargains out there.

Large banks gave out loans (mortgaes) to people who shouldn;t recieve them because they're credit was bad. In time, these people (large amounts of people, remember) were incapable of paying back these loans, so the banks were incapable of getting back their money, which bankrupted the banks.

banks give out loans->people can't repay loans->banks don't get money back->we all suffer :-(

it's called a bear market
do you know what that is
have you ever heard of a "bear market"
it is quite normal, I assure you
markets go through cycles
you should learn these things so you won't be surprised
unless you like surprises of course
your not one of these people
that think that stocks rise at the same rate all the time as they did in the 80's and 90's are you
sorry, stocks aren't like that
and you should expect a very poor performing stock market for say the next 12 years or so
you see interest rates (long term interest rates) are heading higher
which will keep a lid on stock prices for a long time
as I said before, its all about cycles
