born to be an olympian | What happens to my stock if a company declares bankruptcy? |
I own a few hundred shares of (AHM) american home mortgage and i only bought it a few days ago thinking that it was as low as it could get and now they are talking about bankruptcy, I am wondering what will happen to my shares? Will I ever be re-imbursed if the company comes out of bankruptcy?
if they come out of bankruptcy will i be able to make a profit over the next years if the company takes off again an has no debts left?
Will I be able to trade my shares like normal if they come out of bankruptcy? Is it likely that I can still make a profit if they go bankrupt pay of the creditors and the business takes off again? |

Bankrupt stocks are a write-off. You can only hope they will try use bankruptcy protection methods to prevent a total collapse, but the way the mortgage industry is looking right now, I would say the chances of being bailed out by a buyout firm are slim. Just hope they won't fold.
What most companies do when they come out of bankruptcy is restructure their entire share system. Its really hard to say whether or not you are still going to get a piece of the new pie although more often than not you don't. These new shares can be traded normally on the market.
Read up on the history of companies like Delta Airlines and Air Canada. They will give two different scenarios of how companies emerge out of bankruptcy. |

with all the talk abotu sub prime hits including two straigh -100 days last week you do this???? Once the stock goes to bankruptcy it truns into Pink Sheet Garbage. IF it survives then that stock will probably be worthless and new ones will be issued.

I hope you bailed out when zyberianwarrior advised you to the other day. Sorry about the fate of AHM for you, but there are 7,000 people losing jobs as a result of that bankruptcy so remember, it could be worse. Better luck next time. =) |

If the company goes under, there will be no stock and thus your shares will become worthless and you'll lose your entire investment.
If the company emerges from bankruptcy, it's likely the shares will still be deemed worthless and major investors and financiers who supply money during the bankruptcy will be issued new stock.
There's always a small glimmer of hope during the bankruptcy that shares will be worth something if it emerges, but it's best to sell it and take the loss. |

When a company goes bankrupt the stock is worthless. Say good night now.If the company does not go out of business and resurrects itself it issues new stock. Sorry about that but years from now you will look at this as a costly learning experience just like most of us have had but dont always like to admit to. Be careful of buying stocks that are too cheap. Bottom fishing only works when there is a likelihood of the stock moving upward. Stocks that are going belly up are cheap but not good risks. |
