start out with a larger sum of money.

kidding. see my post history. get an advisor with 15+ years experience in the markets and has traded professionally. That does not mean you have to trade but the advisor needs real market experience.

Bill Q
You say you want to invest money "independently." Independent of who? You are not being clear. If you invest money, you are going to being giving money to someone, so you can't be independent of everyone. Explain what you mean by "independent." Otherwise, you won't get any good answer.

Invest in a good solid bond fund. PTTAX is one such fund.

Short term, put it in a savings account.

Long term, index fund or growth and income stock fund.

3.5% APY on an HSBC online savings account - I know you said you're not into that, but the rate is a good one and sometimes jumps to 4%. Safe bet for a few years at least.

I wouldn't recommend foreign currency without a good amount of practice. The FX markets have been very volatile lately and while there is opportunity for big gains, you can lose your shirt (and your money!) Also, shorting is somewhat risky. I know the market sucks, but there is unlimited potential for you to lose money.

You could do a CD from your local bank too - but that locks up capital and is likely to top out at 4%, so why not just go with HSBC then.
