What is a better bet?
I have a 401k, in it I have some small cap growth fund and some mid cap growth fund I am not sure if I should dump one for the other or not. At the moment I have much more of the mid and its been a good earner but will it continue to do that, and honestly I'm not sure if the small cap is a decent earner or not.

I would try to keep it as diversified as possible. I would keep both... But maybe add an international fund and a large cap fund to the mix.

depends on your age. if you're young, move some to the highest risk investments. if they go bad you have time to recover. if you stay with the safe stuff all the time, you'll miss out on gains riskier investments can give you.

I agree with OZEKI, age is the factor!

I agree with the first poster, plus you should have some bond fund exposure, too.

Hi! Please read the below given article and choose the better one . It is about mutual funds, how they make money for themselves with little people's money.

http://www.reportonbusiness.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20071029.wrfund29/BNStory/SpecialEvents2/home.

I hate to make a drastic change in a portfolio but I am tempted to say this. Just do some research and buy 4 good blue chip stocks in 4 different category and stick to it for about 15-20 years and you make more than any mutual fund investment. If you invist in stocks which will pay dividends and automatically re-invest them by default ( you need to set up that account) you make more. My advice would be buy Exxon mobil ( energy) , Bank of America ( finance), Microsoft ( technology) and GE. All pay dividends and reinvist them and you make more money. At the end you are the best adviser to you.. Good Luck!!

Diversify! Don't put all your money into one fund just because it's been doing well recently. 401K money is for the long-term, and over the long term you should have your money spread over large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, and international at the very least. If you're older I'd suggest bonds as well (if you're 30 or less, you have much more time, so you don't need the bonds yet.)

And I think John's probably missing the point, since very very few company-sponsored 401Ks allow you to buy individual stocks. Perhaps I'm wrong in my assumption, though.

Small caps have better returns over time, dump the mid cap which over time does the worse.

For long distance runner MID-CAPs are the best. Keep betting MID-CAPs
