Hey everyone. I just got my first "real job" about of college about a month ago. They are offering me a 401k with a match up to 3% and then 50 cents to my dollar up to 5%. Would this be considered good, bad, or in the middle? Thanks.

I just turned 23, and i am currently investing 5% of my salary into the 401k monthly. |

I think that is a very good match. I get 50% up to the first 7% of my income. Really, any match is a good match, as it is basically free money. Take full advantage of it. You should also work on saving 3-6 months pay for an emergency fund, and if you have that, and max out your 401k contribution, open an IRA or ROTH IRA. If you max those out as well, than start buying real estate, stock, bonds, or other riskier investments. If you are 25 now, you need to save about $275 a month to be a millioinaire by the time you retire. Good luck!!! |

anything over zero is great as long as you love what you're doing... now, contribute to the max and don't borrow against it... EVER. Some companies don't even offer a match. |
