For S & P I like Vanguard's VFINX but Fidelity has a good one also. Vanguard is owned by the funds (meaning the people that own the funds) and Fidelity is privately owned so IMO Vanguard works harder for me.

Index funds are not "managed" funds which means you don't need to pay a manager to pick stocks for you. That makes their costs very low.
So you want to find the fund with lowest fees. I think that is likely Vanguard and their S&P 500 fund was the biggest fund in the world at times.
Don't buy index funds from a company that are "loaded" meaning has fees for either buying or selling. You are paying the loads for no reason with index funds.

Let's get a little more specific:
The S&P 500 and DJIA's are indexes...not index funds. I think the general industry consensus is that the S&P 500 is a good index and the DJIA is a mediocre index.
If a mutual fund or exchange traded fund (ETF) chooses to index based upon either of these indexes...keeps it's costs to a minimum and tracks the index exactly, it is likely a good index fund. Vanguard and Fidelity's S&P 500 Index funds come to mind as do SPY, DIA, and IVV.
