juvaw22 | What is a good mutual fund choice??? |
I have an extra $8000 I want to invest before my 25th birthday and I want to do it in a farely safe mutual fund. Im cool with taking a bit of a risk but I cant afford to take to much of a loss. Im more or less looking for something steady. Is a 12% annual return wishfull thinking? |

I'd go one of two ways...( or a little of both)...FEMKX is Fidelity's " emerging markets" fund...and THAT is where an awful lot of money is being made ...the world is growing and trading...buying materials, equipment, metals, software etc, and putting it all to work...( without the DRAG on their economies that our POOR lending policies have stuck US with)
Another fund that very actively trades in the market and does it well is: CGMFX.... an excellent manager that makes frequent moves and beats the S&P regularly ... even made good money in 2001 and 2002.
Between the two, the 12% you are looking for is VERY attainable... good luck. |

The best company to find quality mutual funds is Vanguard. The are very customer friendly and offer very low rates.
They are probably the most recognized mutual find company around. |

A 12% annual return is wishful thinking but it does happen. Clark howards website has some no load low cost family funds. Steady would be closer to 5% ...not 12%. |

The amount of risk you should take depends on your timeline. If this is money you will need in the short term, you don't want a mutual fund - park it in the bank or in a money market fund. If you are investing for the long term (five + years), then consider a good balanced fund like one from T. Rowe Price or Vanguard. |

index funds are a good safe bet. The have low expense ratios and generallt outperform mutual funds over time. If you choose this route buy directly from the company as some discount brokers charge you through the nose. For instance TD Ameritrade is $10/trade for stocks/etfs, but charge $50 a trade for funds (learned that the hard way).
Some good index fund companies are Vanguard, Fidelity, T Rowe Price. |

even though a mutual fund is already diversified, you might want to split your money between 2 or 3 mutual funds. personally, i would go with some international like Nicholas-Applegate (NAGPX) (it is a growth fund) and Westport Select (WPSRX) (mid cap) domestically. both had rebounded a little stronger than some other mutual funds after the July/August dip in the market.
good luck! |
