Individual Retirement Account

IRA stands for Individual Retirement Arrangement, according to the IRS tax code. Its a tax-sheltered account that you can contribute an annual amount to until you retire. The interest, divideneds and capital gains grow tax-free until you withdraw the money. There are two kinds of retirement IRA's, a conventional and a Roth. Contributions to a conventional may be tax-deductible and taxable when you take them out. Contributions to a Roth are taxed before you put the money. It grows tax-free and is not taxed when you take it out.

Common Sense
An Individual Retirement Account (both the original/regular and the ROTH IRA) have certain tax advantages.

Contact Schwab, Fidelity, T Rowe Price or Vanguard for good information.

Stay away from Primerica. Expensive funds with salesreps that generaly only know how to part you from your money.

Just to give you an example of what an IRA can do for you tax-wise, I would have owed $800 in taxes this year before I contributed to an IRA. My accountant said if I max out a Traditional IRA at $4,000, I would get back like $300, which is an $1,100 swing. It's a great deal if you can afford it.
