It depends on 2 conditions: (1) the tax rate now and the tax rate in the future, and (2) what can you invest in your 401K plan.
Tax-wise, you first need to understand the following: (1) 401K and traditional deductible IRA are tax deductible and tax deferred. (2) RothIRA is not tax deductible, but the income is tax free. (3) Traditional nondeductible IRA is tax deferred. (Note that there are 3 kinds of IRAs account---traditional deductible IRA, traditional nondeductible IRA, and RothIRA.) Therefore, the best one for you depends on your current tax rate and your future tax rate, but in general 401K and traditional IRA are very good.
Investment-wise, 401K often has limited choice of investment. If your choice is so limited that you can make enough compound growth, then it may not be good for you.
Bottom-line: you still need to do a little research to decide which one is better. |

All of the names you mention are good vehicle for retirment, but the best one to start with is 401k. Why 401k? Becuase 401k is offer by your employer, and sometime they match dollar for dollar defend on the company you work for. There are no investment tool out there that can guarantee a 100% return year over year. Don't be afraid to take advantage of it, you have nothing to lose.
Do not wait any longer to particpate. Start now, the clock is ticking as you wait. |

I am the lone wolf on Roth Ira's... I prefer traditional Ira's... Defer taxes is my motto!
If you qualify for a 401K, it has much higher contribution limits depending on your salary.
Index mutual funds are very tax efficient and you can invest in those in a non tax sheltered account if you have extra cash.
Read some of the books on bobbrinker.com .. his book list is filled with great learning tools. |

Take a small amount of "disposable" income say 2,000 and deposit it into a trading account. make some small investments, learn to play. When you feel comfortable making financial decisions in the market (you will take some losses at first) flip it over to a Roth IRA. After tax money goes into this account. You handle your own investment decisions and you never pay taxes on the earnings. |

401K probably the best, ira's are good too. might want to talk to your local bank. they can set you up with a financial advisor |

A ROTH IRA. The money you put into it to start with is taxed, so you can take it out if you have an emergency, but if you let it grow until you retire, you can have the money all, tax free. A traditional IRA is tax exempt right now, but you have to pay taxes on all of the money that grows in that type of fund. A 401K is tax exempt right now, but you will pay on with drawls after 60 1/2 years old.
Personally I would buy GOLD right now. Specifically Gold coins prior to 1933 (higher numismatic value). Gold bullion, such as American Gold Eagles or Krugerrands are not coins and can be confiscated by the Government in an emergency. Bush just signed a bill to that effect a few months ago. |

You can only get a 401(k) from your employer. Many employers offer some type of matching funds, if they do, then this is the best retirement fund since it's like getting free money from your company. The second best depends on your personal situation, but for most people it's a Roth IRA. A Roth IRA differs from a regular IRA because while it offers no tax advantage now, your investment grows tax free. So, when you are ready to retire and take out the money you have saved and earned you will pay no taxes whatsover. |
