Bull Market
A financial market of a certain group of securities in which prices are rising or are expected to rise.

Bear Market
A market condition in which the prices of securities are falling or are expected to fall.

To simplify, bull when most investors are optimist that the economy will grow, and so does stock market. this can be backed by strong financial performance.

But whenever the economy is not as what they expect, they be very pessimist that they will sell their stocks. This can be contributed by overall economic growth and fall in companies financial performance.

In Indian stock market context, "Bull" and "Bear" were traditionally known as "Tejadiya" and "Mandadiya". They are the operators in the stock market operations and are different from investors and Day Traders.

Bull operates in the market accumulating / making purchases or also called "long" by some people, anticipating rise in prices of the scrips / shares he /she is accumulating - irrespective of any kind of news whether strong results, some inside or key information, overall trend....etc And sells his shares/ scrips on rise in prices thus making profits.

Whereas Bear operates for the reverse reason - anticipating fall in prices and thereby sells his holding - rather blank selling most of the time; also called "short" by some people and covers/ buys his / her short selling later on when prices fall, thus making profits. Bear also has his own reasons for fall in prices of shares considering negative factors and news.

At times, both bull and bear get trapped when prices don't rise or fall as per their anticipation and incur heavy losses.

To cut the description short here, bull derives its name as such because of its (animal's) natural attacking posture of throwing opponents up by its horns. While Bear throws the opponents down on the ground (surface) while attacking. Same way Tejadiya expects Teji in the market and buys while Mandadiya expects Mandhi and prefers to sell first.

A bull market is a market where prices are in a rising trend.

A bear market is a market where prices are in a declining trend.

You can also have a sideway market where prices are neither in rising nor declining trend.

A bull market is when stocks are rising (think of a charging bull).
A bear market is when stock are stagnant or declining (think of bears hibernating).

There are two activities in the stock market of buying and selling which impact the ruling price at any moment. The buyers are called bulls or longs, and the sellers are called bears or shorts.

A bull in stock market is an optimist. He buys shares in anticipation of a strong upward trend in stock prices. On the other hand a person who is always skeptical of the prevailing conditions in stock market and who is very cautious in buying shares is called a bear. If the number of bears exceeds the number of bulls ,the market trend will be sluggish on that day.

A bull market is when the market or stock is aggressive and on the move. A bear market is when the market or stock is slow or sluggish. This is just a simple answer, there is more to it, but without going into much detail, this is it.

'Bull' is an indication that the stock market is up and 'Bear' is an indication that the stock market is down.
