commodities are materials commonly used in an economy, consisting of a variety of items. commodities trade in commodity markets. They include such things as corn, rice, soybeans, copper, gold, silver, gasoline, and similar products.

A commodity is physical pruduct, that you could take delivery of, and use in your industry. Like oil, coal, sugar, coffee, zinc.
You would normally by a future and then sell it before maturity or roll it over, otherwise you might get a load of barrels of oil/sugar/zinc etc.dumped in your front garden!

Well actually in depends on what exactly commodity you're asking! here are some definitions
1.Commodity is a term with distinct meanings in both business and in Marxian political economy. For the former, it is a largely homogeneous product, traded solely on the basis of price, whereas for the latter, it refers to wares offered for exchange.
2.A commodity is food, a metal or another physical substance that investors buy or sell, usually via futures contracts.
3.A good or a service that is exchanged for money. The origin of the term is wider, arising from the idea of a convenience or accommodation.

Marvin the Martian
A commodity is anything which is saleable in the market.
