interim dividend in respect of shares, is paid by a company's management in between a financial year of the company. this does not require the approval of the shareholders. interim dividend can be declared as many times if the company perceives good profits in its business in that particular year.
when a company declares interim dividend in a year, it may subsequently declare a final dividend at the end of the year after finalising its books of accounts. the total dividend, interim plus final, will have to be passed by the share holders in the Annual General body meeting of the company.
when approved in the AGM, it becomes the dividend paid for the financial year of the company.

Interim dividends are distributed at any time in the financial year. This is based on the current profit gains of the company. At the end of the financial year, the accounts are consolidated and a dividend amount will be determined based on the company's profit for the year. This is called Final dividend.
