Investing and gambling are somewhat similar, however I would say that investing is when the expected return is positive (so a positive sum game) which gambling is where it is zero or negative.
Trading FX for example is often not investing, but gambling, because it is a zero sum game. However with the right knowledge some hedge funds find investment strategies (usually arbitrage - i.e. when it is no longer a zero sum game).
Trading equities however should be positive expectation, because they should on average grow at the risk free rate, plus risk premium.
Playing roulette is gambling because the expected return is less than your investment.
If you need to be lucky to break even or better - its gambling. If you need to be unlucky to break even or worse - its investing.
Of course both contain risk. |

Investment is what u give unto with the motive of huge profit in return.. If u invest money in mutual funds or in share market u want to get a huge interest on ur money invested. same way if u invest ur brain in studies u do it with the motive of scoring high marks.. thus investment is what u give unto. |

the basic concept is that you loan some money to a company. they in turn give you stocks in their company. The stocks are suppose to be valued based on the company earnings.
That is not what most investing is about though.
it is putting money in a stock where the value will go up, but not necessarily in relationship to the companies finances.
for instance, in 1993 if you put 8500 in stock in Microsoft. It would worth well over $100, 000 to day.
There is also investor confidence that will effect the price of a stock. even if the company has good earnings it may be in a sector that there is no confidence.
The other form of investing is buying stocks that the company pays dividends. Usually stocks like this do not vary, since the company is paying you part of the profits in dividens. |
