StevenWeinstein thank you for your input, but I have that under control. I'm going to need to take out a student loan... this is most likely to help me pay that off more quickly.

Depends on what the rate of return you are looking for. CDs are lame, cause you cannot touch them, generally, until they are due or without incurring some fees. In this crazy market, especially when the recession rears its head, you want liquidity. You are dead on with the Energy sector. I would also consider the natural resources sector too, as minerals and such are also in short supply and therefore their value is becoming ramped up. Perhaps focus on an ETF or an iShare, which is focused on those areas, but also involves some diversification within the Fund that allows you to minimize at least some of your market risks. Since these are 'close-ended' funds, they are liquid just like regular stocks...allowing you the ability to scram on the investment if you need to cash.

A 17 year old should use the money for education. Go to college. Paying your tuition is the best possible investment at your age.

TSSA!
Hmmm... interesting question.

First, the economic recession is not a sure thing. Media sells better during tragedy, so they will sometimes make them up. Besides, do you really trust journalists to predict the market? However, assuming the worst is often a really good idea. So, we will operate under the spectre of recession.

My advice: If you think there is a recession, don't invest in anything right now, except maybe foreign currency. Why?

If there is a recession, the market will slump in general. If you hold onto you money, you can grab stocks with great discounts mid-recession. Investing in foreign currency is just a way to prevent a US recession from KO-ing your cash in the meanwhile.

The real question should be "What should I buy mid-recession when the market is down?" I dunno. Whatever goes down the most relative to intrinsic value, probably. Wait until we get there.

In this situation, you are betting there will be a recession. If you win the bet, you can buy stocks for cheap. If you lose, you have wasted a couple months of returns.

Conversely, if you bet there won't be a recession and you buy battered, value stocks: If you win, you have a nice portfolio. If you lose, chances are the rockbottom stocks you own will fall less than the market, so you still have cash on-hand.
