Stock Market is a place/ market where sellers and buyers of shares meet.
Earlier it was a physical market, now a days it is a Virtual Market.

Share Traders (buyers and sellers) open a Demat account with bank/ They then get in touch with a Share Trafing portal like sharekhan, icicidirect, shcil and trade via this portal.

The portal shows them the number of shares at various prices of its listing. Buyers of shares need to buy them at the listed price.
The listed share price changes every second based on the demand and supply trends.

If demand for a share > supply of share - Price Increases
If demand for a share < supply of share - Price Decreases

SENSEX is an indicator of BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE shares.
NIFTY is an indicator of NATIONAL STOCK EXCHANGE shares.

Stock Exchanges are centres thru which the trading takes place.

How Sensex is calculated:

SENSEX
is the cumulative growth/ fall of the top 30 companies based on their market capitalisation.

Market Capitalisation: Market Price of the Share X Total Number of Shareholders.

At the end of the day, top 30 Companies ( based on Market Capitalization) are selected, their stocks movements are studies
.
If their cumulative average is UP, the share market indicator goes UP
If their cumulative average is DOWN, the share market indicator goes DOWN.

(NIFTY is also calculated on similar lines, only difference being instrad of top 30 Companies, NIFTY considers top 50 Companies.

If you are new dont invest directly in stocks of companies, invest in mutual funds. because if you make mistake in selecting stocks then you may lose money but mutual funds are managed by highly experienced fund managers and they keep track of the markets. Mutual funds collect money from investors and invest in good stocks based on their knowledge and research. You can research about good MFs at www.valueresearchonline.com or www.moneycontrol.com Since the mkts are currently down this is the best time to invest.

A Stock Exchange is the place where investors go to buy/sell their shares. You know what an Equity share is. If not check: http://anandvijayakumar.blogspot.com/2008/10/equity-shares.html

Once a company's public offering is complete, it gets listed in a stock exchange. After listing it would be available for trading to all investors in the stock exachanges where they are listed. In India we have two major stock exchanges. They are:

1. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) &
2. The Bombay Stock Exchanges (BSE)

The NSE is India's largest and the worlds third largest stock exchange in terms of Transaction volumes & amounts. The NSE is based out of Bombay. The NSE has set up its trading platform as a nation-wide, fully automated screen based system. This enables anyone in any part of the country to trade on shares listed in the NSE.

The BSE is the oldest stock exchange in Asia. It is situated in Dalal Street in Mumbai. It is the third largest stock exchange in south Asia and the tenth largest in the world. BSE has over 5000 companies that are listed in it. The objectives of the BSE are similar to that of the NSE. BSE also uses the latest technologies in the IT field to provide a single place where traders from across the world can buy/sell shares in the Indian share market.

The BSE Index or the Sensex as it is popularly known, is the index of the performance of the 30 largest & most profitable, popular companies listed in the index. Each company that is part of the index has its own weightage in the value of the Index. The Value of Sensex is the weighted average of the prices of these 30 companies...

Regarding Factors:
Demand supply theory drives the index movement. If demand for shares is more the index goes up and when the supply is more the index goes down.

SEBI - Securities & Exchanges board of India is the regulatory authority that regulates the share markets in India.

To know more about SEBI check - http://anandvijayakumar.blogspot.com/2008/10/securities-and-exchange-board-of-india.html

If you want to know the features, rules and regulations, you
go to a shop and buy a book and read on it.
One should open a demat account with any bank or members of NSDL and have a trading account to buy
and sell stocks thru them. It can be done online too.
There are procedures. Now you can buy stocks at the
most bottom prizes and wait for appreciation . If you are
young and can wait for few years as a long term investor
you may become a member of a DP. If you cant wait and
take chances, better invest in fixed deposits and
Fixed Maturity Plans of Mutual funds. Integrated Enterprizes is one such firm which will help you in both. It has branches all over india in big cities. Contact them.

You can learn the basics about stock markets in the following article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_markets#Short_selling
I recommend you to get your higher education instead of learning what stock markets all about. I personally know persons have lost ranging from HK$10k to 10 millions in investing in stock market shares, mutual and hedge funds, warrant (go and put) investments, and the one lost everything by investing the margins in Hong Kong financial institution.
You can get some good books in library, university, and book stores. However, you need to spend time to read the books thoroughly. I suggest you should go to get higher education instead of learning the stock markets. You will have a better and stable life in the future and keep away from gambling in stock markets.
