What is the 'safest', long term investment of 5k?

Additional Details
which is also the best investment with the highest possible return.....in your opinion?

ISAs, as someone else has mentioned - or government bonds. Not sure if £5k would be enough to buy some though.

U.S. SAVING BONDS: or a five year cash deposit. the rewards are not as great but you can not loose either.

US Treasury CDs are considered safest in the World, since it the US Gov't Defaulted we have much bigger problems then your $5K...

Bank CDs (FDIC Insured) are great since you have less than the $100K maximum insured by the Gov't. Meaning if the Bank Failed you still get all your money.
Bank CDs lock up themoney though, you are loaning the money to a Bank for 3 months, 6months, 9 months, a year, etc... and in return they are giving you 5% interest.

If you needed earlier than the term agreed upon, you'll lose most of the interest gained... in penalties but you'll get your 5K back.

Mattresses and coffee cans have proven to be safe places to store money as long as your spouse or dog don't discover your secret.

High interest saving account.

The safest investment is the one that has most chance of giving you your expected return. Safe to get about 4.5% is a gilt edge govt. bond. There is negligible risk in that.If I was Warren Buffet I would say GE or JP Morgan for high return. Other than that I would try and buy a really nice house in a really nice area at about 14% discount of the advertised price and live in it for the next 10 years or so. Not that you could do that for £5k except maybe Florida! (Oh I said really nice)

According to a recent article I read in 'this is money' website

the National Savings Bank is the safest at present

ISA or a high interest account at the bank would be safest - but may not give you the greatest return!

The approach with the least risk and acceptable returns :

Follow an index tracker fund (right now i would be carefull) generally they can not be outperformed except by a hand full of investors Buffett, bogle etc

If you are in the UK go for an ISA

Or learn long term investing like value investing, take some time to learn it before investing, my source for this is Warren Buffett, the ultimate investor
